HP - Sustainable consumption and biodiversity

HP contributes to reducing deforestation. HP requires its supply chain to use raw material from sustainable forestry. For printer paper, HP managed in 2019 to use only raw material that was either certified (according to FSC) or recycled. No deforestation took place to obtain the raw material. For the raw material used for HP paper-based product packaging, 65% has been achieved with a view to 100% by the end of 2020.

The paper used by customers in HP printers represents about 20% of HP's total carbon footprint. The goal of sustainable raw material for packaging means that the people who receive the products indirectly contribute to sustainable forestry.

In addition to using sustainable raw material, HP is supporting WWF and other projects to restore and improve the management of over 80,000 hectares of forest in Brazil and China by the end of 2024. Forest areas in these projects can produce enough paper to meet the needs of our HP consumer printers for four years (although it is not certain that the raw material will come from these particular countries). That's why HP works with WWF and others where there is a positive local impact for people and the environment.

By promoting the use of sustainable paper raw materials in HP's supply chain, it contributes to several global goals: 12 for Sustainable Consumption and Production - when HP uses it in packaging, 13 for Combating Climate Change - when we help restore forests and reduce deforestation because forests are important for the climate, and 15 for Ecosystems and Biodiversity - directly by supporting forest restoration
