Make a Difference

Lenovo's "Make a Difference" partnership with the XBillion Skills lab in India enabled Lenovo to train workers in roles that provide higher living wages. This helps India's disadvantaged residents with skills and training that in turn helps them move from poverty to India's growing middle class.

Lenovo is now looking at the innovative solutions that can have the greatest impact in reducing the product water footprint.

Photovoltaic project

In FY 2018/19, Lenovo continued the expansion of solar projects at our facilities in Morrisville and Whitsett, NC, USA; and in Wuhan, China. These projects represent nearly 6 MW of potential solar power generation capacity. Lenovo aims to achieve 30 MW of owned or leased renewable energy generation capacity globally by 2020.

Low Temperature Solder

Lenovo engineers in Japan have invented a low temperature soldering (LTS) process, which generates 35% less carbon emissions when soldering circuit boards. Lenovo is now working with the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) to implement this technology in the industry by 2019.

Supercomputing heat recovery

Lenovo's ThinkSystem SD650 high-density server was developed in collaboration with Intel and the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ) in Munich, Germany. The direct water-cooled design enables 85 to 90 percent heat recovery. Since liquid cannot be used to cool everything in a data center, LRZ and Lenovo are expanding alternative cooling by converting the "waste" in the form of hot water into cold water that can be used to cool the rest of the data center.
