Welcome to the IT industry

Go for an IT profession! IT professions are for everyone, says IT&Telecom's Fredrik von Essen when he participates in the third episode of the Education Podcast.

Those of us working in the IT industry - or rather the digital sector, as IT is 'everywhere' - know how many exciting and diverse careers there are. However, we need to continue to convince people that IT is not just about IT and programming. Everybody - and I mean everybody - who is even remotely interested in working on developing services that help people and develop our society is needed in the IT world.

Examples of professions highlighted in this episode of the podcast are:
- Project Manager
- Usability designer (or UX - user experience).
- Business developer

... which are IT job roles that are anything but 'techy' and where collaboration and people skills are everything.

 - But don't you have to learn programming?

My standard answer is that it is good if you have a foundation in it, but the important thing is that you have an understanding of the system, that you know what a digital system can create. Not all lawyers deal with legal texts on a daily basis and not all economists deal with accounting, but they still need a basic understanding of how the legal and financial systems work. Similarly in IT: understand what technology can do and you can change the world.

If you want to make a future-proof choice, then take an IT education, preferably at Nackademin or another vocational college, click here for more reading.
