"AI is the icing on the cake"
- But AI is really the icing on the cake. The first step is to make sure you keep track of your data, says Markus Lingman in the Vitecherupp podcast.
At Region Halland, it took a year to compile and structure their data in accepted formats. According to Markus Lingman, that's where you have to start.
- Nothing visible is created that year but it is an important first step. You need to compile your data in a data warehouse and make sure you have the legalities in place so you know how you are allowed to use it.
The next step is to bring together the competences needed and to make them understand each other.
- That is probably the biggest challenge. The clinician who has a picture of how to treat a patient with heart failure must be able to talk to the computer science people about it. And the scientists have to be able to work with the economists and so on along the knowledge value chain
Only when it works, can we start to engage in Artificial Intelligence and bring in people with AI skills. Who, with the help of data and smart algorithms, can figure out which heart failure patients will have renewed symptoms. To take one example.
- Even when we built the data warehouse, we prepped it to run AI. We put in powerful processors and stored the data in its rawest format.
The work and commitment have paid off. When the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKL) presented the list of Sweden's best county councils in 2019, Region Halland topped the list with the most satisfied residents and a clear first place. Markus Lingman is now planning to share his experiences in a book published together with SKL and AI Sweden.
- Hopefully it will be available in March 2021.
