Amazon - Energy-efficient clouds and promoting biodiversity
At Amazon, we are not afraid to set high goals to help accelerate the climate transition. This brings us closer to our goal: to reach 100% renewable energy in our operations by 2025. In 2022, Amazon set a new record by being the company that purchased the most renewable electricity in one year. Through 133 new projects in 11 countries, it increased its energy capacity by 8.3 gigawatts.
As part of this effort, Amazon has invested in four wind power projects in Sweden. Together, the wind power projects will add 746 megawatts of renewable electricity to Sweden's grid, equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of more than 253,000 Swedish households.
Through energy-efficient servers and extensive efficiency programs, Amazon Web Services can offer an infrastructure that is five times more energy efficient than the median of individual company data centers surveyed. Swedish companies can therefore process their data in the cloud, reducing their electricity consumption by almost 80%.
Sustainable industry, innovation and infrastructure
Amazon is a partner of the First Movers Coalition, a coalition to lead the transition away from fossil fuels in shipping. The initiative was launched together with the World Economic Forum and the US government. The First Movers Coalition brings together several large global companies and several countries, including Sweden, to reduce emissions in global shipping and support technology innovation that enables fossil-free global maritime transportation. By joining the effort, Amazon is also committing to make at least 10% of all our international ocean shipments fossil-free by 2030 and all our ocean shipments fossil-free by 2040.
Fighting climate change
Climate change requires collective action, which is why in 2019 Amazon, together with Global Optimism, launched The Climate Pledge - a commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2040, ten years earlier than the Paris Agreement. So far, 300 companies and organizations in more than 50 industries have signed the Climate Pledge, which is both about reducing their own emissions but also about inspiring more companies and organizations to raise their ambitions. As part of the Climate Pledge, Amazon also has an investment program to support the development of new technologies that can reduce emissions.
Ecosystems and biodiversity
To safeguard ecosystems and biodiversity, Amazon is working with the municipality of Katrineholm and the local water company Sörmland vatten to upgrade the city's stormwater infrastructure and to create a new wetland outside Katrineholm. Scheduled for completion in 2026, the project will help reduce flood risk, improve water quality, support biodiversity, and provide residents with a new recreational area.
In 2021, Amazon was one of the companies that launched the Lowering Emissions by Acceleration Forest Finance Coalition (LEAF). LEAF is a global initiative launched by governments and companies around the world and has so far resulted in over a billion dollars being allocated to protect the world's tropical rainforests.
