Max Gordon is AI Swede of the Year

Today, the winner of the AI Swede of the Year 2023 award was announced. The award is presented by the industry and employer organization TechSverige and goes to a person who has made a special contribution to the development and visibility of Swedish AI. This year's winner is Max Gordon, Associate Professor and Chief Physician and Head of Clinical AI Research (CAIR-lab) at Danderyd Hospital.

Max Gordon is being recognized for his pioneering work and research in AI in healthcare. He is the driving force behind the world-unique innovation lab CAIR-lab at Danderyd Hospital, which conducts clinical AI research focusing on the use of AI in healthcare.

- Max Gordon is a pioneer whose efforts are paving the way for new innovations and the use of AI to improve people's lives and have the potential to revolutionize healthcare in Sweden and globally. With his knowledge, passion and curiosity, he is a true role model and his work is contributing to real change," says Åsa Zetterberg, Director of TechSverige and Chair of the jury.

CAIR-lab, which collaborates with Karolinska Institutet, is characterized by its collaboration between hospitals and universities to rapidly develop and test AI solutions in real-world healthcare contexts and transform them into useful products. The lab also collaborates with experts from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), taking forward ideas from clinical researchers to solve medical problems using AI.

The work has resulted, among other things, in an AI program created by Max Gordon being used at Danderyd Hospital to assess fractures and suggest treatment. The program, which provides the same accuracy as a doctor, aims to provide better and faster care by classifying fractures and providing treatment recommendations based on AI assessments.

The jury's motivation:
Max Gordon is an enthusiast who, through his dedicated work and research, shows that the potential of AI is enormous. Through research and hard work, he has introduced AI solutions into healthcare to improve the assessment and treatment of patients with successful results. This includes developing AI that is now as skilled as an orthopedist at identifying fractures. His work enables patients to receive both faster and better care. Max Gordon is an inspiration and an excellent example of a person who, based on his professional role, has deepened his knowledge of AI to find the best solutions that create benefits. He is a pioneer and invaluable player in Swedish healthcare and AI research that makes a real difference and puts Sweden on the international AI map.
