Migration Agency replaces certification process with new work permit system
As of December 15, 2023, the Swedish Migration Agency will abolish the certification process for work permits. Instead, a new model will be introduced on 29 January 2024. Member companies of TechSverige have previously had the opportunity, either themselves or through Almega, to obtain certification from the Migration Agency. This certification has meant faster processing of work permit applications for third-country nationals.
The decision to abolish the certification process and introduce a new model has been taken to streamline and adapt the process to reduce processing times and improve service to companies recruiting highly skilled workers.
The new work permit system will prioritize applications for highly skilled occupations, including many of the tech occupations. There will also be better service and information for employers recruiting highly skilled workers.

TechSverige has actively worked for faster processing times and prioritization of work permit applications for IT professions and stressed the importance of a smooth transition from the certification process to the upcoming system.
- Our goal is a smooth and efficient system for fast processing of work permits. This is important for our companies and for Sweden's competitiveness. Over the past year, we have been actively engaged in collaboration councils and working groups at the Swedish Migration Agency, where we have not only asked important questions but also raised our concerns about the new work permit system," says Ana Andric, Business Policy Expert at TechSverige, adding
- At the moment, we do not have full insight into how the new system will evolve and whether it will be an improvement over the current system. We will monitor developments closely.
