Agnes Stenbom is AI Swede of the Year 2024

Today, the winner of the AI Swede of the Year 2024 award was announced. The award is presented by the industry and employer organization TechSverige and goes to a person who has made a special contribution to the development and visibility of Swedish AI. This year's winner is Agnes Stenbom, head of the inclusion lab IN/LAB and responsible for trust issues at Schibsted Media and founder of the Nordic AI journalism initiative.

Agnes Stenbom is awarded for her groundbreaking work showing how AI can shape the future of media to support democracy and inclusion. She is an industrial PhD student and one of the founders of the Nordic AI Journalism initiative, where she works to promote responsible AI development in journalism. Her efforts have contributed to an ethical and transparency-driven use of AI that puts human values in focus, both in Sweden and internationally.

Through her work, she shows how technology can help strengthen citizens' access to reliable and relevant information. IN/LAB was founded in 2022 as a joint initiative between Schibsted Media and the owner foundation Tinius Trust. Since its inception, it has been led by Agnes Stenbom and works to ensure that a diversity of voices shapes the future of media. Together with young people from underrepresented groups, it explores new technological possibilities and creative ways to meet the challenges many experience with editorial media today.  

Nordic AI Journalism, co-founded by Agnes Stenbom, is an industry network that since 2020 has been promoting responsible AI use in journalism in the Nordic region and beyond. By bringing together experts and journalists, it explores ethical AI solutions that strengthen journalistic values and democracy, while focusing on citizens' trust in the media. 

Jury's motivation:
With her groundbreaking work for Schibsted and the Tinius Trust, Agnes Stenbom has shown how AI can shape the future of media to support democracy and inclusion. As founder and director of IN/LAB, she has explored the opportunities and challenges of AI technology in the media industry and led the way for an ethical and sustainable use of AI that puts human values at the center. Through the Nordic AI Journalism initiative, she promotes responsible and transparency-driven development of AI in journalism - making her a role model and inspiration at both Swedish and international level. As an industrial PhD student, with a unique combination of leadership and visionary perspectives, Agnes Stenbom is a strong voice for technology that empowers both citizens and society, and her work sets a new standard for ethical AI use in media.

About the AI Swede of the Year
