Digital infrastructure for politicians
The 2026 election year is underway and many issues are fighting for space on the political agenda. For us at TechSverige, Sweden's development as a leading technology nation is obviously at the top of the list. A strong digital infrastructure and innovative digital services are crucial for Sweden's competitiveness, modern welfare and for all people to be able to participate in the development of society.
Digitalization is affecting almost every aspect of our lives - how we work, shop, travel, and access healthcare and education. Behind all this is an invisible but crucial foundation of modern society: the digital infrastructure. It's the fiber networks that stretch across the country, the mobile networks that connect people, machines and vehicles, the data centers that store and process information, and the cybersecurity that protects it all. Together, they form an ecosystem that makes digital services work - from Swish and 1177 to smart grids and connected homes.
Despite the fact that digital infrastructure is crucial to society, business and people's everyday lives and security - and despite the important role of politics in this area - we can unfortunately conclude that issues of digital infrastructure and digitization do not have a sufficiently central place in the political conversation, in party programmes or among priorities. Few parties have a clear spokesperson in this area and many politicians find the issue difficult and complex.
For Sweden to remain at the digital forefront in the long term and have a digital infrastructure that meets the needs of society, business and people, we need a strong tech industry that enables this, but we also need politicians and parties to become more involved in digital infrastructure issues. We believe that an important key is to increase knowledge among politicians - and thus also interest.
