How next-generation satellite networks can strengthen Sweden's digital infrastructure
Access to fast, secure and stable digital connectivity is a prerequisite for business, public services, competitiveness and participation. Sweden has a strong digital infrastructure, but there are still places in the countryside, in the forest, at sea and in the air where the current infrastructure is not enough. To reach new areas and increase resilience, more complementary technologies are needed - new satellite networks can play an important role here.
With this in mind, TechSverige and Amazon hosted a roundtable discussion on satellite connectivity and how it can complement Sweden's digital infrastructure, as well as the role of space in strengthening Sweden's innovation and competitiveness.
- For all of Sweden to be able to take advantage of the opportunities offered by digitalization, we need a modern and diverse infrastructure. New satellite networks can be an important complement that strengthens both connectivity and robustness throughout the country," says Robert Liljeström, industrial policy expert at TechSverige.
During the call, Amazon presented Project Kuiper - a global low-orbit satellite network that aims to enable high-capacity broadband even in areas where terrestrial networks are difficult or costly to deploy.
The discussion centered on how regulatory frameworks and national strategies can create better conditions for satellite broadband and how the EU Space Act needs to relate to national needs and sovereignty.
Several of the participants emphasized Sweden's ability to continue to be a leading innovation country in space technology and the ambition to get more Swedish companies to grow and become successful in the field.
- Project Kuiper contributes to the Swedish space industry as well as Swedish competitiveness by giving more people access to fast and reliable connectivity. We have a close collaboration with Beyond Gravity in Linköping who develops our satellite dispensers and look forward to working with more Swedish actors to continue developing space technology," says Helena Hånell McKelvey, Head of Public Policy at Amazon Nordic.
