TechSverige on the spring budget: Clear reforms are now needed for Sweden’s future
The government’s spring budget contains positive initiatives but lacks the reforms needed to strengthen Sweden’s long-term competitiveness. After a term marked by strategies, the focus must now shift to implementation. In the face of a serious security situation, increased global competition, and rapid technological development, TechSverige calls for clear priorities, and there is still room for the government to take further action during the remainder of its term.
Technology is playing an increasingly important role in employment, growth, welfare, and security, while global competition is intensifying. The need to strengthen Sweden’s long-term growth potential is therefore becoming ever more critical. Developments in AI create significant opportunities for increased productivity and competitiveness, but also require investment, the right skills, and a regulatory framework that enables innovation. At the same time, the tech industry continues to grow as one of Sweden’s most important engines of growth.
– It is encouraging that the government is investing in technical education and taking steps to improve our understanding of AI’s impact on the labor market—something we have been calling for. But in a situation where the skills shortage is already holding back growth, making only marginal adjustments is not enough. It is also important that the Minister of Finance clearly emphasizes that growth must come through increased productivity and more hours worked, and that measures that reduce the labor supply in the economy should be avoided, says Christina Ramm-Ericson, Head of Economic Policy at TechSverige.
For the recovery to be sustainable, we need not only sound public finances, but also initiatives that strengthen innovation, improve the supply of skilled labor, and create attractive conditions for investment and entrepreneurship.
In its manifesto, "Techsäkra Sverige," TechSverige highlights four areas for reform to strengthen Sweden's future: enhanced digital literacy, better conditions for jobs and growth, a more efficient welfare system, and increased digital security and preparedness.
“What is needed now are far-reaching reforms that strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness, capacity for innovation, and security. The government still has opportunities to make a final push in the months leading up to the election, but these should also be key priorities for the next government,” says Christina Ramm-Ericson.
