From Strategy to Reality – The Next Step for Sweden’s Digital Future
Yesterday, representatives from the public sector, the business community, academia, and civil society gathered at the Digital Sweden conference, a forum for everyone who wants to help shape Sweden’s digital future.
Based on Sweden’s digitalization strategy, the conference was organized by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) and the Agency for Digital Government (Digg). The focus was on what is actually needed for Sweden to take the next step in its digital development and how various stakeholders need to work together to make this a reality.
One thing that became clear during the day was that Sweden has a strong foundation to build upon. We have a strong capacity for innovation, a high level of digital maturity, and a shared ambition to harness the potential of technology to strengthen welfare, competitiveness, and growth. The task now is to continue creating the right conditions to take the next step and turn our ambitions into concrete results.
Åsa Zetterberg, CEO of TechSverige, participated in a discussion on how new technology creates new opportunities when established industries and digital innovation converge. One perspective highlighted was that the tech industry today contributes more to Sweden’s GDP than traditional basic industries. Sweden’s unique strength lies in the fact that we have both a strong industrial base and a world-leading tech sector. It is at the intersection of these two worlds that much of the next generation’s innovation, productivity, and competitiveness will be created.
The Minister for Civil Affairs also announced the name of the new agency to be formed when PTS and Digg merge: the Digitalization Agency. The new agency will begin operations on January 1, 2027, and expectations are high. The tech industry hopes for a strong focus on promotional efforts that can help create better conditions for Sweden’s continued digital development.
The conference took place about a year after the government adopted Sweden’s digitalization strategy. Over the course of the year, several important initiatives have been taken to strengthen Sweden’s digital competitiveness, not least through increased political prioritization of digitalization issues and the decision to consolidate responsibility and resources within the upcoming Digitalization Agency. These are positive and necessary steps that demonstrate an ambition to create better conditions for innovation, an efficient public sector, and enhanced competitiveness.
At the same time, continued drive, greater unity, and a strong focus on implementation are now needed to turn these ambitions into tangible results. Sweden has every opportunity to take the lead in the digital transition, but the pace needs to pick up, and more stakeholders need to pull in the same direction.
Today’s discussion showed that there is strong commitment, the work continues, and we are already looking forward to next year’s Digital Sweden.
