Revised Terms for Employee Stock Options—A Key Factor in Ensuring That Young Companies Stay and Grow

How can we encourage young Swedish companies to stay and grow in Sweden? Qualified employee stock options are a key factor in securing talent.

How employee stock options are taxed may seem like a minor technical tax issue. But in reality, it is crucial to ensuring that young, fast-growing companies can remain and grow in Sweden. As previous studies have shown, these companies are important for employment in Sweden.

Digitalization has meant that the size of the domestic market is no longer as critical a factor in companies’ location decisions. A decisive factor in their choice of location, however, is the ability to recruit top talent from other countries. If top talent does not move to the companies, the companies will move to where the top talent is. Since young companies have limited capital, the terms of employee stock options are crucial for fast-growing young companies to remain in Sweden and grow here. This important issue will be discussed at a seminar.
