"Innovation and entrepreneurship are key to driving growth"

Interview with Lars Kry, CEO of Nexer Group.

The pace of digital development is fast and in several areas the EU has struggled to keep up with the countries and regions leading the way globally. What do you think is most important to strengthen the EU's digital competitiveness?

- The rapid pace of development we are experiencing requires prioritization, action and investment. For the EU to increase its digital competitiveness, I believe that greater investment is needed in AI, infrastructure and cybersecurity. These are areas that will bring about major changes for companies, society and citizens, and this requires efforts and investments.

A common criticism of digitalization policies in the EU is that the regulatory burden has increased significantly in recent years. Do you share this view and how does it affect your business?

- The regulatory burden in the EU has increased, which is largely related to initiatives aimed at protecting consumer data and privacy (e.g. GDPR) as well as regulating new technologies such as AI with, for example, the AI Act. I think that this is a must as new technologies emerge and technology matures. However, it is important to ensure that innovation, flexibility and speed are not negatively affected as these are important competitive factors.

Sweden will soon elect 21 Members of the European Parliament. What are your messages to the candidates and what three issues would you like them to pursue in Brussels to promote the development of a competitive and sustainable digital Sweden?

- It is of great importance that the candidates represent Sweden in a meritorious way and actively pursue issues that strengthen Sweden's position in a competitive and sustainable digital future. Here are three key issues I would like them to take with them to Brussels:

1. innovativeness

Innovation and entrepreneurship are central to driving growth and competitive businesses. The EU should facilitate collaboration, innovation and research efforts and contribute to a healthy breeding ground for entrepreneurs and business creation.

2. digital infrastructure

For Sweden to be a leader in digitalization, it needs access to a strong and robust digital infrastructure across the country. This includes not only the cities but also the more remote and rural areas. MEPs should work to ensure that EU support and regulatory frameworks prioritise and facilitate the rapid roll-out of 5G/6G. This is essential to enable digital innovation on a broad front.

3. tech skills

Digital skills are a cornerstone for navigating and exploiting the opportunities offered by digitalization. Candidates should push for the EU to step up its efforts to integrate digital education at all levels - from primary school to university and adult education. In particular, it is important to focus on programming, data analysis, cybersecurity and digital entrepreneurship as core competences in curricula.
