A flexible electricity system is a prerequisite for achieving a balance between production and consumption. In a future electricity market with a high share of renewable and variable electricity production, it will be important to make use of all flexibility resources in the electricity system, i.e. flexible production, storage and demand response.

Creating the conditions for more flexible demand is high on the European agenda. In June 2015, the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate (Ei) was commissioned by the government to study demand response in the Swedish electricity system in more detail. The purpose of the assignment is to propose measures to facilitate and accelerate the development towards greater efficiency in the electricity market through increased demand response.
