Minister for Digitalization Peter Eriksson at IT&Telecom Day on 9 November.

The broadband issue: Two good things and one wish

Today, the government announced that they are providing an additional SEK 150 million (to the previously announced 850 million) in broadband support under the rural development program. Very welcome! It corresponds to about one piece of a 1000-piece puzzle, but still - every piece is needed.

At the same time, the Swedish National Audit Office announces that it has initiated an audit of the government's efforts in the broadband area with the aim of "examining whether the government has worked effectively to achieve the parliamentary IT policy goal of secure and accessible electronic communications, i.e. whether it has created the conditions for Sweden to have world-class broadband, and whether it has made it possible for all households and businesses to use electronic public services and services via broadband." Also very good! A constructive review can hopefully activate the broadband policy further.

But what we need most is a new broadband strategy from the government. The previous one has served Sweden well - both with its concrete speed targets and its focus on the market primarily building our digital infrastructure - but now we need an updated, up-to-date and more ambitious strategy to work towards together. And now I dare say that most indications are that the new broadband strategy will be more ambitious than the previous one, will cover everyone and not just 90% of Sweden, will be more up-to-date in its speed targets and will also be ready to be presented very soon. Maybe even in time to be this year's Christmas present?

Dare I wish for that, on behalf of the Swedish people, Peter Eriksson?
