5G - the ambition that went up in smoke
Do you remember 2017? That was when the minister responsible solemnly declared that Sweden would lead the world in 5G development. The industry welcomed the ambitious statement and said it was prepared to quickly roll out and offer services as long as it had access to frequencies.
In 2018, Prime Minister Löfven said that Sweden has the opportunity to be at the forefront of network roll-out. And the PTS came out with its feasibility study saying that the auction of the 5G frequencies could happen in 2019.
PTS auction is stopped
Do you remember 2019? That was the year it all went to hell - even though it started so well. In February, PTS presented proposals for the auction and in June the formal consultation process started. Everyone was preparing for the auction. But then the obstacles came thick and fast. A new law was pushed through in record time. And PTS had to pull the emergency brake. In November, it was announced that the auction had been postponed to adapt the process to the new law and to consult with the security authorities.
Authorities must agree
What will we remember about 2020? If the industry has its way, this is the year when 2017's plans are realized. Sweden still has the opportunity to turn the tide and regain a leading position in digitalization. We would start the roll-out of 5G networks, enabling the connection of everything from machines and buildings to everyday objects and access to new innovative services.
But for that to happen, the authorities need to agree. Agree on a legally secure, efficient and fast process so that PTS can consult with the market. And it is urgent if we are not to fall even further behind. Give the industry clear rules that create good investment incentives and Sweden has a chance to catch up, and maybe even take the lead again!
