"Digitization creates new conditions where tech and sustainability go hand in hand"

Fossil Free Sweden recently hosted a webinar to discuss new technologies and business models. The focus was on digitalization as an enabler for resource efficiency, circular solutions and the sharing economy.  

Ms. Åsa Zetterberg, Director of the Federation participated in the panel and highlighted in particular that:

  • With today's digital maturity and transformative power, we can think in completely new ways and shake up previously deeply rooted values. Digitalization gives us completely new conditions where tech and sustainability belong together.
  • According to the World Economic Forum, 70% of the global goals can be achieved by using existing new technologies.
  • If Sweden is to be a leader in sustainability and tech, the basic conditions must be in place.
  • Sweden is still doing relatively well, but other countries are catching up fast andhe political will and ambition are needed to create the conditions for taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digitalization.
  • We need fast connections all over the country and investments are needed to increase skills and digital excellence, which is currently lacking in business and in our industry.
  • Effective use of data sharing requires 5G and Sweden has not acted quickly enough in the development of 5G - now the policy must create the conditions for use and innovations linked to 5G.
  • The public sector needs to take more interest in sharing publicly owned data in order to create innovation and smart solutions.
  • Concrete proposals from IT&Telecom companies to address the skills shortage include tech checks, an individual-based support for digital skills development, which gives people incentives to seek knowledge, which will help companies and the public sector. But also that companies have an incentive to have a compensation deduction, which can currently be made for machines, but not for knowledge.
