The unsustainable electronics tax
Since 2017, Sweden has had a tax on electronics - an entirely national tax that has skyrocketed by 71% in two years as a result of legislative changes, despite the fact that increased tax revenue was not the legislator's intention. The tax not only burdens companies with heavy administration to no avail, but also those with the thinnest wallets. For example, a TV can cost almost SEK 700 more in Sweden than in our neighboring countries. The tax is also questioned by the government's own authorities as it has not led to any environmental benefit whatsoever because national taxes unfortunately do not drive global change.
TechSverige, the Swedish Electronics Industry, Teknikföretagen and the Swedish Computer Games Industry believe that, in light of the many known problems with the electronics tax, it should be abolished immediately.
The report The Unsustainable Electronics Tax describes the impact of the tax on the environment, consumers and the economy and was updated in April 2025.
