Making Europe stronger again

Yes, that almost Trump-inspired phrase is the title of the European Commission's work program for next year. With the Programme, the Commission aims to deliver action and progress in all six priority areas identified for the mandate period, namely

  • the European Green Deal
  • a Europe fit for the digital age
  • an economy for people
  • a stronger Europe in the world
  • promotion of our European way of life
  • a new commitment to democracy in Europe

The 2022 program, as so many times before, contains a wide range of initiatives that will be presented during the year. Many of them are legislative proposals, while others are recommendations, roadmaps, communications and others that will not be binding. Looking a little closer at what is to come in the digital area, there are a few initiatives that perhaps deserve a little extra attention and they are:

  • A legislative proposal on cyber resilience (a so-called Cyber Resilience Act) planned to be presented in the third quarter of 2022
  • A possible legislative proposal on a European data chip planned for the second quarter
  • Launch of the deployment of a European space-based, global and secure communication system for broadband connectivity in the second quarter
  • A draft law on European media freedom to be published in the third quarter as well as
  • A review of state aid rules for broadband
