Sweden turns off 2G and 3G - Switch networks now
By the end of 2025, 2G and 3G networks will be phased out in Sweden and replaced by 4G and 5G. This means that everything that depends on connection to these old networks will stop working. This includes everything from older mobile phones to alarms, card terminals and emergency phones in elevators. It affects both businesses and individuals, but at the moment many of those affected are not aware of this. In a new information campaign, the industry and employers' organization TechSverige, together with mobile operators Tele2, Telenor, Telia and Tre, is calling on everyone to review and replace old solutions with modern technology - before the networks are shut down.
Sooner or later, all technology becomes old and needs to be upgraded or replaced. The old networks do not meet the high security requirements of the digital society. Closing down the increasingly underused 2G and 3G networks frees up capacity to offer faster, more stable and more secure services via 4G and 5G.
- Modern networks at the global forefront are an important foundation for a competitive business sector, efficient public services and the green transition. The technology shift also means that older equipment is replaced with more efficient and energy-smart technology," says Robert Liljeström, industrial policy expert at TechSverige.
The closure of the 2G network is planned to be completed by all operators by the end of 2025. The phase-out of 3G networks is already well underway, with more than half of the 3G network switched off. The change means that older mobile phones, broadband modems and other connected electronics that do not support 4G, 5G or other modern technologies need to be replaced with newer models. As an individual, organization, business or connected service provider, you need to act on the change now.
The aim of the information campaign is to raise awareness of the ongoing technology shift and get everyone to ensure that their connected technology is future-proof.
- We have engaged many organizations, companies and authorities for the campaign. Our hope is that as many people as possible will be involved in spreading knowledge and helping everyone to review their connected electronics while taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the new networks," says Robert Liljeström.
