Tech industry as an employer in 2024
The tech industry is one of the most attractive and healthy sectors in Swedish business. This is shown in a new report from Nyckeltalsinstitutet, commissioned by TechSweden. Tech companies are distinguished by good employment conditions, healthy employees and market-based wages.
- Like last year's report, this one shows that the tech industry continues to be a healthy and attractive workplace," says Tina Ekström, CEO of Nyckeltalsinstitutet.
Secure employment and high managerial density
99 percent of employees in the tech industry have permanent employment, and companies have a high managerial density with an average of 9 employees per manager. This creates good conditions for a healthy working environment. Absenteeism due to illness is low, especially long-term absenteeism, which shows that the working environment in the sector is healthy.
Moving forward for gender equality
The tech industry is becoming more gender equal, with more women in both employee and managerial roles, although change is slow.
- "Progress is moving in the right direction, but the pace needs to increase. At the current rate, we will achieve gender equality by the end of the 2030s," says Tina Ekström.
The pay gap is narrowing, and women have as good a chance as men to reach management positions. At the same time, there are areas for improvement, such as further reducing the pay gap and increasing gender equality in management teams, as well as creating the conditions for more equal parental leave.
High attrition rates and skills shortages
The tech industry has relatively high attrition rates, with 12 percent changing jobs in 2023. One explanation is the growing need for skills, where Sweden will need an additional 18,000 tech specialists annually by 2028.
- High attrition rates in the tech industry are largely a result of the current skills shortage, where competition for talent is high. Employees often choose to move on to other companies in the industry," says Einar Humlin, head of negotiations at TechSverige.
Increased investment in skills development
In 2023, tech companies invested an average of six working days per employee in skills development, an increase from previous years.
- Skills development initiatives are an important part of addressing high competition and skills shortages. It is essential for tech companies to be competitive in a rapidly changing world. We need to continue to enable these initiatives," says Einar Humlin.
