TechSverige launches the initiative "Open the door to tech internships"

TechSverige is launching an initiative aimed at encouraging more employers to offer LIA internships to students in IT programs at vocational colleges. At vocational colleges, theory is combined with practical training; this practical training is called LIAand takes place in a workplace. The initiative aims to strengthen the supply of skilled workers and improve the alignment between education and the labor market. The need for digital skills exists across large parts of the economy—not just in the tech industry but throughout society.

On adedicated page, TechSverige has compiled articles, inspiration, and concrete examples from member companies and organizations that are already actively working with LIA and higher vocational education. It also includes contact information for educational providers offering IT programs that are currently underway or will begin in 2026.

– LIA is one of the most important bridges between education and the workforce. By offering internships, employers can both contribute to students’ development and simultaneously strengthen their own talent pipeline, says Ana Andric, economic policy expert at TechSverige.

Higher Vocational Education – A Key Component of the Skills Supply
Higher Vocational Education (YH) is a form of post-secondary education developed in close collaboration with the business community. The programs are needs-driven, practically oriented, and designed to meet current and future skills needs in the labor market.

A central component of higher vocational education programs is the internship, Learning in the Workplace (LIA), where students complete a significant portion of their education in a workplace setting. During LIA, students have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, build professional experience, and establish contacts with employers.

For employers, LIA also offers an opportunity to access current skills and get to know potential future employees early on. The need for IT skills exists today in many parts of society, from the public sector to industry, commerce, and service companies.

The tech industry wants to be a door opener
The “Open the Door to Tech Internships” initiative is also part of TechSverige’s leadership manifesto, where one of the key concepts is “door opener.” The tech industry wants to help more talented individuals establish themselves in the workforce by opening up networks, experiences, and opportunities.

– In our leadership manifesto, we highlight the importance of being a door opener. It’s about seeing people’s potential and generously opening doors to networks and opportunities. Offering LIA placements is a concrete way for employers to do just that, says Ana Andric.

Member companies’ experiences clearly demonstrate added value
TechSverige’s member companies that are involved in vocational college programs and host LIA students highlight several positive effects:
* Opportunity to contribute to students’ learning and development
* Students can be prepared for actual work tasks and roles
* LIA gives employers the opportunity to identify and develop future talent early on in a practical setting.
* The collaboration strengthens relationships with educational providers and contributes to more relevant programs

Compiled information for employers wishing to host LIA students
As part of the initiative, TechSverige has compiled articles, guidance, and contact information for educational providers offering IT programs currently underway or starting in 2026 on the campaign page (link)
The goal is to make it easier for employers to connect with educational programs and begin hosting LIA students.
