International Men's Day. Because it is 2015.
Today is International Men's Day. Apart from the fact that there has been an inflation of various days to celebrate, one might wonder what on earth this is all about? Is there really a need for a separate day for men, or for that matter International Women's Day, which occurs on March 8 every year and draws attention to inequality and the situation of women? Doesn't it feel a bit... outdated? And kind of against the whole idea of putting people first and not dividing us by gender?
According to Wikipedia, International Men's Day has been celebrated on November 19 since 1999, to "focus on the health of boys and men, and recognize men's contributions to society, improved relationships and highlight positive male role models".
A selection of the objectives to be considered during International Men's Day are
- To promote positive male role models.
- to celebrate the positive contribution of men to society
- To improve gender relations and promote gender equality
- To create a safer, better world, where people can be secure and grow to reach their full potential.
Quite commendable, I think. And, unfortunately, definitely something we still need. Because you know what it looks like. It's 2015 and we've come a long way on many issues, but no, we don't live in a perfect, equal or egalitarian world. Far from being the norm, it is world news when a Prime Minister puts together his government as Justin Trudeau did, and this is just one of too many examples. Even though he very cleverly used "because it's 2015" as an argument for where we should be, we are not there. Yet.
I don't celebrate like that, but I am happy to draw attention to both this International Men's Day and all the men who do good things in this world. Not least those who will be attending the 5050 Club's seminar on the theme "Gender equality - how do you do it?" tonight. What a difference you make!
