Necessary investment in broadband welcomed
The government wants to allocate SEK 1.4 billion in 2021 to the expansion of broadband throughout the country. This is an investment that IT&Telecom companies have long worked for and which is welcomed.
- This is very good news! The broadband infrastructure is absolutely crucial if Sweden is to meet all the challenges of the future we face. A well-developed broadband network is necessary for people to be able to live and work throughout our country. And also absolutely necessary to run businesses and offer welfare to everyone - no matter where you live and work," says Christina Ramm-Ericson, head of industrial policy at IT&Telekomföretagen.
The budget allocates an additional SEK 500 million to broadband expansion in 2022 and then SEK 100 million annually from 2023 to 2025. The Government's proposal is based on an agreement between the governing parties, the Center Party and the Liberals.
In a report from 2019, IT&Telecomföretagen stated that continued large investments and support funds are needed to achieve the goal of everyone throughout the country having the opportunity to get fast and stable broadband. Investments in broadband are also one of the key measures highlighted by the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise to restart Sweden after the crisis. In the proposal for a political action plan presented by IT&Telekomföretagen early in the corona crisis, the need for investment in the digital infrastructure was also highlighted as particularly urgent to secure employment and growth throughout Sweden
- "The coronavirus pandemic has clearly shown that access to high-speed connectivity is central to maintaining social functions and business. It is therefore gratifying that the government and the cooperation parties are now proposing substantial investments in this infrastructure," Christina continues.
