Strengthening producer responsibility before deposit schemes

Yesterday, the report on a deposit system for small electronics submitted its proposals to the government. Instead of a deposit system/certificate of deposit for mobile phones, the report recommends a strengthened producer responsibility for increased collection of electronics. IT&Telekomföretagen welcomes this as it would have a better environmental impact than a costly deposit system aimed primarily at collecting the historical stock of mobile phones.

- "A deposit risks impairing circularity and instead supporting the purchase of inferior mobiles with a shorter lifespan and thus leading to reduced circularity. "Being the only country in the EU to introduce a deposit on mobile phones would create unfortunate trade barriers for Swedish companies and weaken Swedish competition," says Frida Faxborn, industry policy expert at IT&Telekomföretagen.

- We urge the government to listen to the report's conclusions. Strengthen producer responsibility, use the study's basis for the ongoing European process to review a common system and let the industry, among other things, produce accurate data and improve information to consumers on how, for example, mobiles can be returned to lay the foundation for a change in consumer behavior.
