Today, the finalists for the 'Sustainability Award of the Year' in Tech Awards Sweden, an award and industry event organized by TechSverige and Foundry, are presented. Six entries have made it to the finals this year. The nominees are; CIOCO2, Einride, Hack for Earth Foundation, Northe, WhyWaste and Örebrobostäder.
This year's sustainability prize is awarded to the organization or company in the tech industry that has contributed to positive sustainable development through its actions.
The jury includes Johanna Giorgi, Chief Sustainability Officer at AddSecure:
Johanna Giorgi, Chief Sustainability Officer at AddSecure- The world is in urgent need of transformation and tech is a key to enabling this transformation. In the context of sustainability, we often talk about goals that are set in the future, while time is a scarce commodity. I am therefore delighted that the jury has selected nominees who are using tech to transform and challenge industries - including the IT industry itself - here and now.
The winning entry will be presented at Tech Awards Sweden on March 22 at Sergel Hub in Stockholm.
Finalists in the category 'Sustainability Award of the Year':
CIOCO2
The tech industry accounts for a surprisingly large share of energy consumption in society and thus increases the world's carbon emissions, while we know that digitization has the potential to contribute positively to many of our societal challenges and influence our climate in the right direction. CIOCO2 is an initiative aimed at spreading knowledge and awareness of the impact that digitization and IT have on our climate and creating tools for IT organizations to act more sustainably. The focus is on raising awareness and sharing knowledge about how to take responsibility for building sustainable IT in organizations, in everything from hardware management to cultural issues. The initiative currently involves a large number of CIOs in both the private and public sectors.
CIOCO2 offers both a network for CIOs and IT decision makers as well as knowledge sharing through conferences, a toolbox to start the change in your own business, assessment and training.
Einride
Einride has created a new transport system where, through electrification, digitalization and automation, they create more efficient freight mobility and transport while reducing emissions from heavy transport.Through an ecosystem of electric and autonomous trucks, charging infrastructure and a digital freight mobility platform, Einride enables companies to move to sustainable and optimized transport. Their digital platform tailors the planning and coordination of heavy transportation while providing real-time reports and actionable insights on emissions, energy use and performance. In addition to reducing emissions, Einride's electric fleet also helps to reduce particulate matter and noise pollution.
Hack for Earth Foundation
Hack for Earth foundation is a non-profit foundation that, through global innovation competitions (hackathons), has created a global movement and forum for young changemakers around the world to create innovative technological solutions to achieve the UN's 17 global sustainability goals in Agenda 2030. The foundation's work is a powerful way to get young people around the world to contribute to a more sustainable world and contribute with concrete solutions to our most pressing sustainability problems.
Northe
Northe is a tech startup with the vision to simplify the transition from fossil fuel powered vehicles to electric vehicles, for both end users and companies. Northe has developed a platform that, through various solutions, facilitates and automates the management of charging needs for consumers and companies with electric vehicles. By enabling charging and payment with different operators, Northe shows an important example of how the infrastructure around electrification and society's energy efficiency affects everyone. If society is to develop in a sustainable way, we must facilitate all aspects of electrification.
Whywaste:
Whywaste has developed a portfolio of digital solutions to help food retailers manage, minimize and prevent food waste. The portfolio includes solutions for date control for packaged fresh produce and delicatessen counters, dynamic pricing of short-date goods, simplification of donation to charity, and a Business Intelligence system to follow up the store's waste work. Whywaste's solutions are currently used by leading retailers in 18 markets. Sustainability and economy at the same time.
Örebrobostäder
Örebrobostäder has, partly with the help of AI and data-driven decisions, saved 52 percent in electricity consumption and 21.7 percent in heat consumption compared to 2005. With the help of AI, electricity and heat consumption is controlled, resulting in increased comfort as the indoor temperature is kept at a more even level. Today, Örebrobostäder has 100 connected properties (about 10,000 apartments), which corresponds to just over 45 percent of their apartment stock. Their vision is that all of their properties will be smart. With the help of AI, climate emissions and energy costs are reduced while tenants' comfort increases thanks to a more even indoor temperature. Thanks to the significant reduction in electricity and heating consumption, Örebrobostäder saves (at a low estimate) around SEK 86 million a year and can thus also keep rents down. The value of the property has increased by SEK 1.7 billion over the same period.
