"The potential and role of digitalization is fundamental to the climate transition"

On September 15, TechSverige will host the digital sustainability conference A Sustainable Tomorrow. Frida Faxborn, sustainability policy expert at TechSverige, talks about the conference and the role of the tech industry in sustainable societal development.

What is A Sustainable Tomorrow and who is the conference for?

A Sustainable Tomorrow is a meeting place that brings together actors from business, the public sector, civil society and academia. The aim is to share knowledge and create networks with the SDGs as a basis for increased business benefits. This is the tenth year that the conference has been organized and this year the theme is disruption. What does it mean? What needs to be done in terms of the need for new ways of working, business models, partnerships and policies? With 2030 just seven years away, it's time to step up the pace.

How can you take part in the conference?

The conference will be live-streamed during the morning of 15 September and it can only be accessed via hubs set up across the country and in our Nordic neighbors - where TechSverige for the second year in a row is organizing such a hub. This year we will be held at the Internet Foundation in Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm and we have room for many! The target for the conference is 20,000 participants across the Nordic region.

Participation is free and we offer breakfast, coffee and lunch - a great opportunity to network across companies, industries and authorities. Everyone is welcome! It is an opportunity to find and discuss possible collaborations for the future while getting a broad overview of the world in the field. It was very much appreciated last year by our member companies who participated.

How do you see the link between tech and sustainability?

It is quite obvious. The opportunities and role of digitization through its technology and innovations are fundamental and crucial tools for the whole of society and all sectors to transform and become more energy efficient and climate smart by reducing emissions. The potential of digitalisation to reduce emissions through society-wide transformations, more efficient processes and new ways of working is great. 5G technology, together with the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), are the cornerstones of many of the solutions needed to achieve the climate goals.TechSverige is working with our member companies to disseminate this knowledge as more people need to understand, use and collaborate on the industry's solutions. Politics also has a responsibility to show leadership that focuses on digital solutions as keys to reducing climate impact, which TechSverige recently highlighted in our input to the government's climate policy action plan, which will be presented this fall.
