Debate: Long-term strong digitization and AI development require the public sector to be a good customer – not a supplier

The government is currently working on two initiatives that could be decisive for the digital ecosystem of the future:
• a new law on public sales activities
• a possible national AI workshop

In an opinion piece in Altinget, we argue that both initiatives are important – but that they must pull in the same direction. Sweden should not build parallel public solutions where the market can offer expertise, innovation and scalable services.

An AI workshop that strengthens procurement expertise, legal expertise, and coordination can accelerate the pace of digitization in the public sector. But if the state itself begins to develop and deliver digital services, there is a risk that it will crowd out the innovative power that drives Sweden's growth, jobs, and competitiveness.

Sweden's digitalization will be strongest when the public sector and the business community develop together—with clear roles and long-term rules. 🇸🇪
