Christinaskolan, Fredrikshovs Slotts skola and Kista Grundskola top three in Next Up Stockholm

How can school education be improved through the Internet of Things? Eighth graders at Christinaskolan in Stockholm have the answer: a wristband connected to sensors, computers and an application that helps teachers and parents of students keep better track of both student health and student interest in school. With its solution "DoCeo. Feel good. Learn more", they won the Next Up Stockholm 2016 school competition yesterday in tough competition with eight other Stockholm schools.

In Next Up Stockholm, eighth graders from nine schools have been tasked with developing solutions to real-life cases designed by IT companies during the semester, as part of regular teaching. To help them, the students have had a team leader consisting of a female IT student from the DataTjej association, and fresh insights into what it is like to work with IT in real life through, among other things, study visits. Yesterday, the work ended with a joint competition day in Kista Nod, where a qualified jury decided which three schools they thought had come up with the very best solutions to a total of five cases linked to the school world.

Christinaskolan winner

The first prize, which brought 15,000 well-deserved kronor to the class treasury, went to Christinaskolan on Lidingö, which solved the IFS case "How can school teaching be improved through the Internet of Things?" The team leader for the winners was Sofie Siggelin. The assignment was to develop a solution within the Internet of Things together with IFS business systems, so that the school's teaching becomes a model for the country's other schools.

"We call our product Doceo because Doceo means teach in Latin and that's what we want to get across with our product. Our slogan is "feel good, learn more" because our product improves both the health and the learning of the student." the students write in the report that, together with a short film and the final presentation, formed the basis for the jury's assessment.

The jury's motivation for the first prize:

You have demonstrated a thoughtful use and productization that creates great curiosity for the solution. It engages students to take responsibility for their own learning and increases concentration and performance over time. You start from challenges in school and find technology solutions that put the student at the center. You truly demonstrate a cutting-edge solution that motivates students to perform well!

Fredrikshovs Slotts school in second place

Fredrikshovs Slotts skola won second place, and SEK 10,000, with its solution to Hogia's case "Programming in education". The solution consists of an educational program called ProBot, where students learn to program using robots. The team leader for Fredrikshovs Slotts skola was Sonja Ericsson.

Motivation of the jury:

With thorough research, you have created a solution that allows for personalized learning. Your solution is imbued with a humane approach to all students' right to learn. You truly find solutions to engage and motivate students.

Kista Primary School third prize winner

Kista Grundskola was third prize winner, and won SEK 5,000 for their classroom fund, with their solution to Atea's case "A modern school for people and the environment". Their presentation included a range of technical solutions focused on developing the digital environment and making the school more efficient for all students regardless of their needs. The team leader for Kista Elementary School was Jana Prihodko.

Your curiosity and innovative problem-solving will positively change your daily life and that of all students. Your idea will improve learning and attendance at school.
