IT and telecom at the top of all industries in the Attractive Employer Index!
Last week, Karin Schreil, CEO of Fujitsu Sweden and board member of IT&Telekomföretagen, and I both participated in the 2018 Stora Nyckeltalsdag.
Since 1996, the Key Indicators Institute has annually surveyed the actual working conditions prevailing on the Swedish labor market. These key figures together provide a picture of the working conditions, gender equality work and health situation of companies and organizations.
Positive trends were reported: rising sickness rates have been reversed, the move towards gender-balanced management structures continues and the Institute is seeing gender-balanced management recruitments. Many structures still need to be addressed, but the positive changes taking place are encouraging. What is particularly encouraging is that our sector, together with the real estate sector, was found at the top of all sectors in the Attractive Employer Index. And especially represented by the companies that are active in Womentor, with Fujitsu as a good example.
The very attractiveness of the industry is crucial in order to be able to tackle the big issue: the skills shortage, a scourge that most companies in the IT and telecom industry need to address in some way. The 70,000 IT experts that will be missing over the next 3-4 years is not just a number; it is a real problem. Part of the solution for the industry is obviously to be attractive.
The IT and telecoms industry is changing at the same rapid pace as digitalization. From being a sector or industry in its own right, the industry is now more societal in nature. And also much more diversified; economists, behavioral scientists, political scientists, architects - all will be needed. This means that the industry needs to reach new professional groups and new skills. This makes the attractiveness and reputation of the sector even more important.
To get a clear acknowledgement, like yesterday, that we all work in an exemplary industry is exactly what we need.
