Do we need the AI Swede of the Year award?

Recently, the AI Swede of the Year award opened up for nominations. An award that aims to promote efforts, commitment and work in AI that leads to moving Swedish AI forward. The jury includes Elena Fersman, Head of Global AI Accelerator at Ericsson. We asked Elena a few questions about Sweden's position in AI and how she views the award.

How is Sweden faring in AI development?

The digitalization of business and the public sector is a prerequisite for the effective application of AI. Sweden has responded quickly to the digital transformation, enabling the use of the latest AI technologies available on the market.

Strong national networks such as AI Sweden and the Center for Applied AI at RISE are contributing to increased interest in the accelerated development, consolidation and application of AI. The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) contributes strongly to Sweden being a leader in AI - both at the academic and industrial levels and in collaboration between them.

Sweden has a well-functioning collaboration between academia and industry

Swedish universities are investing in AI in both research and education, and new interdisciplinary educational programs are emerging where AI is mixed with other specializations such as medicine. Sweden has well-functioning collaboration between academia and industry, which paves the way for good access to the latest AI algorithms. In addition, many innovative AI start-ups are being created, not least with the support of the Swedish innovation system with Vinnova at the forefront.

Why is the AI Swede of the Year award needed?

Sweden is one of the world's most innovative countries with strongly positioned industries. The development of unique AI solutions and the speed of applying AI methods are critical for Swedish companies not to fall behind in the international competition. The AI Swede of the Year award is important to highlight role models who contribute positively to the development, application and increased acceptance of AI.

What do you think is particularly important in the recipient of the award?

For me, it is important that the recipient of the prize is a role model in Swedish AI and these can be found in many different areas. The person who receives the prize may have contributed to strong AI research or AI innovation, made progress in the application of AI in business or the public sector, strengthened the power of AI within the country, or contributed to increased acceptance of AI in society.
