Reducing double regulation of AI boosts Europe's competitiveness
Major European companies such as Ericsson and Siemens, as well as TechSverige, Digitaleurope, and many other companies in the tech sector and the broader business community, have warned of the consequences of overregulation of AI in the EU. It was therefore very encouraging that the Commission, the Council, and the European Parliament agreed yesterday to reduce the duplication of AI regulations for certain sectors.
Many thanks to Swedish Member of the European Parliament Arba Kokalari (M), who has been a strong advocate and has played a key role in ensuring that the government takes the right stance on regulatory simplification efforts in the EU.
Sweden has the second-highest proportion of companies using AI in Europe. The regulations are therefore of great importance to us. However, the situation remains unclear for medical technology and manufacturers subject to the RED (Radio Equipment Directive). It is unfortunate that the regulatory relief measures are not having the same impact everywhere, especially in sectors that already face a heavy regulatory burden.
The elimination of duplicate regulations may not constitute true regulatory simplification, but it is an important step. Efforts to develop effective EU regulations for investment in and the use of AI must continue.
