DEBATE: Sweden benefits from modern networks
The homeowners want to slow down the shutdown of the old 2G and 3G networks, but postponing the shutdown would be unfortunate. Modern networks are a prerequisite for a smart and secure digital Sweden, writes Robert Liljeström.
In a debate article on SvD Debatt 21/2, Villaägarna writes that the shutdown of the old 2G and 3G networks in Sweden should be slowed down. But the proposal to postpone the shutdown would be unfortunate for the development of a secure and competitive digital Sweden.
Sweden has modern, state-of-the-art telecom networks with fiber, 4G and 5G. New technology provides a better and more secure connection that lays the foundation for digitization that promotes competitive companies, modern public services, new consumer services and the green transition.
However, sustainable digital development requires more than building new. All technology gets old and needs to be replaced when it no longer meets society's needs. Swedish mobile operators are in the middle of closing 3G networks and plan to close 2G networks by the end of 2025 to fully replace them with modern solutions.
