NATO and TechSverige

The fact that Sweden is now part of NATO is a historic event of some significance. So it is with some hesitation that one approaches what this might have to do with a trade and employers' organization. However, there are a few things that might be worth mentioning initially.

Total defense issues have steadily grown for TechSverige and this is unlikely to decrease with NATO membership. For example, both NATO and the Swedish Armed Forces have identified electronic communications as particularly important. TechSverige's members also provide a range of services such as fixed and mobile telephony, IT services and IT operations to important authorities and companies, as well as information and cyber security for many actors. Now, planning and requirements will not only come from the Swedish system, consideration will need to be given to Sweden's allies. In a sense, many of TechSweden's members are already on the front line in peace - in light of the cyber attacks directed at them. This may increase or change with NATO membership.

TechSverige's members include companies owned by actors in other NATO countries or Swedish companies that have operations in other NATO countries. This can be advantageous if, for example, work on infrastructure or other activities can be coordinated within the NATO countries. The member companies that have already operated in NATO countries can provide experience of how the work and planning has been carried out and show ways of relating to NATO and total defense requirements.

"For TechSverige, NATO has been a topic even before Sweden joined the alliance."

There are also opportunities. The mere fact that Sweden has become a member may, in the eyes of many investors, mean that Sweden has become a safer place to invest. NATO also has various programs and forums for businesses. Tech is high on the agenda.

For TechSverige, NATO has been a topic even before Sweden became a member of the alliance. The NATO issue has come up in TechSverige's work on total defense, information security and cyber security. Members and TechSverige's management have received information about NATO and what membership can mean. Through cooperation with the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, there is ongoing work on total defense issues. TechSverige has also become a member of People and Defense.

As the government accelerates its work on contingency planning, supply issues and the consequences of NATO membership, the conditions of the tech industry must be taken into account. Voluntariness and agreements should be the starting point for cooperation with companies. Our members already contribute to a robust Sweden. If preparedness work is managed correctly, they can continue to contribute with innovations and competitiveness that strengthen Sweden's growth and prosperity and at the same time contribute to digital solutions that practically strengthen the country and our allies.

It was almost parodic to realize that a central aspect of 200 years of Swedish history seemed to hinge on the whereabouts of various paper documents, and everything changed when the last one was stamped. It was the end of a story that lasted almost two years. Now something new is starting and NATO membership will probably mean practical and mental adjustments for many people and organizations. That includes TechSverige and our members.
