TechSverige launches the initiative "Open the door to tech internships"

TechSverige is launching an initiative aimed at encouraging more employers to offer LIA internships to students in IT programs at vocational colleges. At vocational colleges, theory is combined with practical training;this practical training is called LIA(Learning in the Workplace) and takes place at a workplace. The initiative aims to strengthen the supply of skilled workers and improve the alignment between education and the labor market. The need for digital skills exists across large parts of the economy—not just in the tech industry but throughout society.

On adedicated page, TechSverige has compiled articles, inspiration, and concrete examples from member companies and organizations that are already actively involved in LIA and higher vocational education. The page also includes contact information for educational providers offering IT programs that are currently underway or will begin in 2026.

– LIA is one of the most important bridges between education and the workforce. By offering internships, employers can both contribute to students’ development and strengthen their own talent pipeline, says Ana Andric, economic policy expert at TechSverige.

Vocational higher education (YH) is a post-secondary educational program developed in close collaboration with the workforce. The programs are needs-driven, practically oriented, and designed to meet current and future skills needs in the labor market.

A central component of higher vocational education programs is the work-based learning (LIA) component, in which students complete a significant portion of their education in a workplace setting. During LIA, students have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, gain professional experience, and establish contacts with employers.

For employers, LIA also offers an opportunity to tap into current skills and get to know potential future employees early on. There is a need for IT skills in many sectors of society today, from the public sector to industry, commerce, and service companies.

The “Open the Door to Tech Internships” initiative is also part of TechSverige’sleadership manifesto, where one of the key concepts is “door-opener.” The tech industry aims to help more talented individuals establish themselves in the workforce by opening up networks, experiences, and opportunities.

“In our leadership manifesto, we emphasize the importance of being a door-opener. It’s about recognizing people’s potential and generously opening doors to networks and opportunities. Offering LIA placements is a concrete way for employers to do just that,” says Ana Andric.
